Keeping your makeup brushes and sponges clean is a very important thing to do as bacteria can grow onto them causing break outs, which none of us want to have. The build up of makeup actually on the brush can affect the way you apply your make up; this can make your look, look cakey or uneven. When your brushes are kept out in the open, dust can settle onto them; meaning this will go onto your face causing your product to be messy.
I have four ways to keep my brushes clean and perfect. I do not wash them every week because this can damage the brushes, however, I have 3 different methods I use.
- After each use I will rub off any excess product that may be in the brush still, on a towel. I have a specific towel to do this on and I lay it on my dressing table so any fallout will go onto that instead of my surface (win win). This enables the brush to stay cleaner in daily use.
- On every Sunday night I will ‘mini-wash’ the brushes with a makeup wipe, this removes any stubborn dirt that the towel hasn't already removed, leaving them cleaner for the week ahead of me.
- Once a month I will then clean all of my brushes, even if I haven't used a particular one a lot. I do this because I can always reach to one and I know it'll be clean. I use Alberto Balsam Mandarin & Papaya Shampoo and conditioner to wash my brushes. This helps to get all the dirt and oils off the brushes, but they don't dry them out and they stay soft.
- I firstly wet the brush using warm water
- I apply shampoo that is relevant to the size of the brush and begin to rub it all over. I then rinse this off using swirling motions with my hand.
- Then I apply the conditioner, I usually leave this on for the time it takes me to do the shampoo stage. I then wash it off and they’re super soft.
- After this I let my brushes air dry because I'm not drying them out using a hairdryer or anything else.
